Harry K. Watts Scholarship Foundation
(Formerly known as the ADAI Scholarship Fund. The name was changed in January 2012.)
It was Charles Townsend’s idea for supporting graphic design students by creating a scholarship fund. Since 1978, the Art Directors Association of Iowa (Harry K. Watts Scholarship Foundation) has awarded scholarships to deserving students enrolled in colleges and universities recognized as having excellent graphic design programs.
Selection of any individual student to be honored shall be made upon recommendation of knowledgeable faculty within the Iowa college or university concerned. Written recommendations are required to be submitted by the faculty. Only properly selected students, whose favorable scholastic performance warrants recognition, will be rewarded by the Harry K. Watts Scholarship Foundation. Recipients of scholarships are not to be favored by virtue of age, sex, color, or creed. The final decision for the granting of any scholarship rests with the Scholarship Committee.
A fund has been established from the support of our past newsletter advertisers and donations from members as a result of efforts primarily by Harry K. Watts. Harry passed away in March of 2011. All the donations to the scholarship fund have been securely invested and the annual scholarship amounts are based on the interest only.
ADAI and the Harry K. Watts Scholarship Foundation strive to maintain and further the professional endeavors of those in graphic design and related fields, to assist students and others interested in the profession, and encourage high standards of competence.
